According to a study published by Forbes, a business has roughly 7 seconds to make a first impression. The time can be even shorter when talking about encountering a business online.
For brands that are trying to establish a presence on Instagram, Bio is often the first thing Instagram users look at when they want to familiarize themselves with a brand on the platform.
The purpose of this article is to cover the basics of optimizing your Instagram bio section and making a solid impression.
Switch to a Business Profile
The first step is to switch your Instagram profile to a Business profile if you have not done it yet. Click on the cog icon on your Instagram profile and go to settings. Scroll down, and you will see the option to switch to a Business profile. Click on it and follow the instructions.
Business profiles on Instagram gain access to action buttons, dedicated location and business hour sections, Instagram insights, and more.
Optimize Your Instagram Name
The Name Field should have a relevant name and/or keyword to make your profile easier to discover.
For instance, if you work as an individual trainer, your Name Field could be “John Smith – personal trainer” or “John Smith, personal trainer.”
The Instagram algorithm considers not just your actual name but the keyword next to it as well. If someone looks up “personal trainer” on Instagram, the odds of John Smith getting discovered are much higher.
Explain Your Business
Instagram users have a limited number of characters that they can include in their bio. To describe what your business does, you need to go straight to the point and make the most out of the available space.
Take traveling brands, for example. If an Instagram page offers excursions in Paris, such a business could include “helping you discover the beauty of Paris” in their bio.
Another example could be a fantasy magazine that publishes short stories. Its bio could have “Journal for fantasy and short story lovers.” The point is that the explanation should be there to let Instagram users know if the brand/business aligns with their interests.
If you want, you can even use an Instagram font generator to emphasize specific keywords in the bio describing your business with the help of custom fonts. Doing so will help your Instagram bio stand out.
Include Relevant Keywords
We already mentioned keywords in the Instagram Name section. However, it is not the only location that you can benefit from via keyword usage.
The bio description can also consist of relevant keywords. They help connect the brand with like-minded followers and give a purpose at a glance. Someone who stumbles upon the page will get a better idea of what it is about if they notice specific keywords.
Let’s say that you are in the healthy eating niche. Your keywords should probably be something like “wellness,” “nutrition,” and “eating habits.”
In case you cannot come up with keywords, put yourself in the shoes of a potential lead. Create a persona and imagine what your targeted audience is potentially looking up on Instagram.
Add a Bio Link
An Instagram bio also has a dedicated section for a URL. You can copy and paste the link or type it in manually. Click Done, and a URL will not be visible at the bottom of your Instagram bio.
In case you are using a clunky and long link instead of a homepage that looks clean, avoid the spammy look with the help of a URL shortener, such as Bitly.
Also, as a rule of thumb, whenever you publish a post on Instagram and want to let everyone know about the URL in your bio, you have to mention it specifically in the post. Instagram does not allow URLs in posts. Brands have to encourage Instagram users to visit a profile page and find a link there.
Insert Contact Details
Contacting a brand via Instagram is not the most convenient method. After switching to a Business Profile, you get access to a dedicated contact information tab which you can use for your phone number, email address, and physical address if you have one.
If someone wishes to get in touch after viewing your profile, they will have the necessary information in front of them.
